Quiet Lessons: What Quiet has been Teaching Me

Six weeks ago, I came to Dzemul, Yucatán, Mexico, a small rural community where my elderly parents now live. I wanted to slow down long enough to simply be with them to enjoy conversations, ordinary moments, and the gift of time together.

I’ve come to find out that the pace here is slower. The roads are still. The mornings are quiet. There are no constant distractions, only the sound of nature, the vibrant green landscape, and the gentle reminder that life does not always have to move at full speed.
I did not come here expecting the quiet to teach me anything. Yet, in the stillness, I have found myself reflecting on where I have been, what I have learned, and who I am becoming. There is something remarkable about quiet. When the noise begins to fade, clarity has a way of finding us.
As a coach, I often walk alongside people navigating transitions: a new leadership role, retirement, a career change, or a season of personal transformation. One of the hardest parts of transition is our desire to rush through it. We often feel pressure to have the answers, make the next decision, or quickly become the next version of ourselves.
What if we've been looking at transition all wrong?
What if the transition itself is the gift?
What if the quiet is not a pause in our growth, but the very place where growth takes root?
The more time I spend in the quiet, the more I realize I wasn't simply changing locations. I was making space to reconnect with the parts of myself that had been drowned out by the pace of life. I am learning that stillness creates space for new perspectives. It helps us release what no longer serves us, recognize how far we have come, and become more intentional about where we are going. The quiet does not remove purpose … it reveals it.
If you are walking through a season of change, resist the urge to fill every moment with activity. Shhh... Just for a moment.… Spend a little time in the quiet. Listen. Reflect. Trust that not every answer arrives with noise. Sometimes our greatest transformations begin in the stillness.
Perhaps that is the invitation every transition offers us, not simply to do something different, but to become someone wiser, more grounded, and more aligned with who we were created to be. Sometimes the greatest transformation doesn't happen because of change. It happens because we finally became still enough to hear what our hearts have been trying to tell us all along.
Quiet Reflection
This experience reminded me that transition is rarely about change. More often, it is about creating enough space to rediscover who we are becoming.
Within my Transition Identity Model™, I describe this as the space between what was and what will be. It is often uncomfortable because nothing feels settled, yet it is also where some of our deepest growth takes place. We are not simply waiting for the next chapter; we are being prepared for it.
So today, I leave you with one question:
Where might quiet be inviting you to become more fully yourself?
Until next time,
Coach Ronnie
